At a time when it seems like cities losing air service is far more common than it should be, Milwaukee is bucking the trend in a major way. This week, the Wisconsin city came into the spotlight when Southwest announced it would begin service from Milwaukee General Mitchell International Airport (MKE) later this year. The next day AirTran made more news when it celebrated its new routes and expanded service from MKE.
Aviation Week covered the news with the headline Battle Brewing in Milwaukee. Beer puns aside, it really does seem like some serious competition is just around the corner, and that means better prices for consumers.
It also means more choices for travelers, though as we saw when Delta gave up on its Boston-Baltimore route as soon as Southwest and JetBlue announced new service, other airlines currently serving Milwaukee may decide to get out before the clash of the low-cost carriers heats up.
