US Issues Unusual Travel Warning for Popular Caribbean Country

The U.S. Department of State has just updated its travel advisory for Turks and Caicos, cautioning travelers about the country’s strict firearms laws. “Firearms and ammunition, including single bullets brought by mistake in carry-on bags or luggage, are illegal,” warns the State Department. “Police strictly enforce these laws, even at the airport when travelers are leaving. Travelers face arrest, jail time, and heavy fines.”

In the past year, several U.S. citizens have been detained in Turks and Caicos for carrying ammunition. Many claimed they had unknowingly left stray bullets in their bags after hunting or shooting trips.

The State Department warns that some travelers have been unable to leave the country for weeks or longer after bullets were discovered in their luggage, with offenders facing potential prison sentences of 12 years or more.

The travel advisory for Turks and Caicos is currently at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution due to the risk of crime. The State Department notes that most crime occurs in Providenciales and that police “may have limited investigatory resources.”

If you’re traveling to Turks and Caicos, the State Department recommends taking the following precautions:

  1. Check your luggage and hand baggage thoroughly for bullets or firearms before leaving the United States
  2. Avoid walking alone and at night
  3. Do not answer your door unless you know who it is
  4. Do not physically resist any robbery attempt
  5. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts and to help the U.S. government locate you in case of an emergency
