Taormina Transportation
Built into a hillside facing Greece, Taormina is a lovely seaport town with beautiful beaches and ancient history of the Greek and Roman era. Getting there is fairly simple and scenic.
Getting to Taormina
The closest international airport is in Catania about an hour away from the city center. Many global airlines service Catania as well as charters and private jets.
The easiest way to get over to Taormina is by booking a shuttle service. There are public buses but they make many stops along the way and they don’t take you to your hotel which can be quite the hike depending on where you are staying. If there are several of you with luggage, most shuttles offer private car transfer as well.
There is a train, but the station is at the bottom of the cliff and a steep climb up the steps with your luggage to reach Taormina city center. Depending on the season, it can be quite hot and exhausting as the stairs are narrow.
The main area of Taormina is blocked to automobile traffic and only a few hotels offer parking options. If you want a car for sightseeing it might be better to pick up in Taormina. There are two public garages on the outskirts of town but you’ll still have to wait for either a bus or taxi to arrive in the city.
Getting around in Taormina
The city center is blocked except to pedestrian traffic so it is a great city to walk in.
If you want to explore the region around Taormina you can rent a scooter. For a smaller scooter, you don’t need a license and only have to be 18. All scooters come with a helmet. Renting one for a week is about $200.
The fastest way to get to the beach is via the cable car. They leave frequently and take you quickly to your destination. Great vantage point for photos and it only costs about $2.50 round trip
