Alvor Things to Do
Alvor is a civil parish located on the southern coast of Portugal. With its extensive history, wonderful architecture, and natural beauty, there are plenty of things to do when in the area.
History
There are a number of structures around Alvor that date back centuries. Alcalar is a group of megalithic funeral temples that was discovered in the nineteenth century, but built and used over several centuries beginning between 2500 and 3000 B.C. There are graves of several types, from megalithic chambers to tombs with false cupolas and side alcoves. Of these, the most impressive are the megalithic funerary temples. For the history lover, there is a visitor center that has displays depicting the daily life of the inhabitants of the region during ancient times.
Another site to visit is Alvor Castle. During the period of Moorish rule, Alvor was a thriving port, but the ramparts defending it were the scenes of violent fighting in the past. Following the town’s destruction, the town walls were rebuilt in 1300 and Alvor was made a town by King João II, who died in the Castle in 1495. Today, some of the walls of Alvor Castle, as well as a turret, remain open to visitors. Finally, visitors can journey to the Abicada Roman Ruins, a Neolithic village that retains traces of subsequent Roman occupation.
Waterfront
Alvor beach is a lovely, long stretch of sand that is great for sunbathing and swimming. There are many beachside bars and restaurants, but not many people know that further down the coast are large rock formations. These formations make an impressive view and make for great photo opportunities.
There is also the Ria de Alvor, which is one of the most significant coastal wetlands in southern Portugal. The mixture of habitats to be found include sand dunes, mud flats, and both salt and freshwater marshes. This diverse region supports a wide range of plant and animal life. The area is bordered on either side of the Arade and Alvor Rivers, and the site is considered a protected wetland by the national government.
