Clearwater Beach Things to Do
Clearwater is known for its beautiful beaches and picturesque scenery? But there are also plenty of other things to do while visiting this area of the Gulf coast.
Beach Appeal
Clearwater Beach comes awesomely alive in spring and summer. It’s the ideal time to chill out on the beach, or play a lively game of volleyball. Stroll along the beach walk, grab some lunch, and stop for some ice cream. Want a more active beach-going experience? Try parasailing, mini-golf, or chartering a boat.
Tired of tourists? Head down to South Beach where the locals live. While there, check out Bird Island, a small bird sanctuary. You will see a variety of magnificent birds.
The sunsets on the beach at Clearwater are known for their beauty. In the evenings Pier 60 hosts live music in its pavilion, welcoming a variety of music styles.
Boat Excursions
Want to explore deeper waters? There are a number of boat excursions to choose from.
Boat Trip to See Dolphins
Dolphin spotting cruises are popular here, you’ll almost always get to see dolphins playing in the wake of the boat. There are different kinds of boats offering dolphin watching excursions. If you’re looking for a smoother ride, choose a slower tugboat. The tug boat lets out tons of wake which the dolphins use to propel themselves, and they’ll often be playing and jumping in it. Tip: Stand at the back of the boat.
Speed Boat Mania
If you love the water and speed, check out the speed boats on Clearwater Marina. You’ll come back soaked and thrilled after experiencing awesome energy and views. Note that this experience is not for the seasick or faint-hearted.
A Daytime Cruise
A daytime cruise allows you to take in the sights of beautiful Clearwater harbor. An afternoon cruise features a live captain’s sightseeing narration that includes points of interest along the route and the history of the region. It’s common to see dolphins here too. There’s even a pirate-themed outing.
Clearwater Aquarium
Compared to the Florida Aquarium across the bay in Tampa, the Clearwater Aquarium is smaller than small, but it is also quite nice. The facility specializes in marine life rehabilitation. On the second floor there’s rehab tanks for sea turtles and dolphins. The ultimate goal is to release these animals back into the wild, but many become permanent residents due to injury. There is a small “pool” where you can get up close and personal with stingrays, starfish, and other small marine life.
More to See, More to Do
On the weekends you can satisfy your shopper’s urge by visiting the Big Top Indoor Flea Market. Looking for an excursion not too far away? Check out Caladesi Island State Park or Sand Key Park.
