This is apparent in the city of Eureka. The city is about a five-hour drive north of San Francisco on Highway 101, nestled in the Redwood forests not far from the Oregon border. It is a quaint little town that brings in a large number of visitors every year. There is a lot to do in Eureka.

Explore the Redwoods

The Redwood forests of Northern California are some of the most unique woods in the United States. The forest is comprised of Coastal Redwood trees, ancient arbor giants that stand at almost 300 feet tall in some cases. Many of these trees are centuries old and live over 2000 years in many cases. Being in the presence of these giant trees is a awe-inspiring experience that reminds you just how small you really are. Two of the most popular groves for these trees are the Rockefeller Forest and Founders Grove. Located just off of Highway 101, Founders Grove is easily accessible for visitors not familiar with the area.

These trees aren’t the only site to see in nearby Redwood National Park. There is also some great wildlife, including elk and black bears. It’s on the coast, so visitors have a great view of the Grey Whales passing by on their winter migration to the warm waters of Mexico.

The beauty of Eureka doesn’t just lie in the forests. The city is also located on the coast of California, meaning you can experience coastal beauty and forests in one day. In 1996, the city built a great network of walking trails along the beaches and coastline that make up the coast of Eureka. It’s a quiet area that more tourists are starting to learn about and take advantage of. Some trails are still under construction.

Architecture

Eureka is home to lots of colorful Victorian-era architecture. The most notable building in the city is the Carson Mansion. The mansion is over a century old and was built in 1885 by William Carson who was a successful lumber magnate at the time. The home still stands today at the top of a hill. Because of its high vantage point, it can be seen from just about anywhere in the city on a clear day. It’s the most photographed building in Eureka.
