Kalam Things to Do
Kalam is a tourist attraction nestled into the Swat Valley of Pakistan. With the nearby mountains and rivers surrounding it, Kalam holds many things for visitors to do.
The Waterways
The rivers of Kalam are formed by snow melting in the mountains. The local folklore claims that these waters have healing properties. What is definitely for sure is that the rivers are a welcome relief from the heat of the day. Many of these rivers connect into the surrounding lakes.
Kundal Lake is surrounded by mountains and pristine views. It is typically reached by trekking about three hours from Kalam. It is highly advisable to take a guide, since you have to follow a branch of the Swat River. You can also reach Laddu Valley, the site of Kundal Lake, by jeep. This journey takes about an hour and a half. Once you’ve managed your way through the hiking or jeep path, you’ll find a beautiful lake that is quite inviting to tourists. There are biscuits available at the lake, but given the remote location, the food can be a little on the expensive side. You can also find water from a fresh water spring along the route.
About 30 kilometers north of Kalam lies the beautiful Lake Mahodand. Maho means “fish” in the local language, and the lake is truly brimming with them. The lake is located in a huge green field that is surrounded by very high mountains. There is also a small forest right in the middle of the lake that can be accessed by a bridge. There are stunning trees along the way and many streams that flow through the area. For campers, there is a campground in the meadow in which the lake is located. Fishing permits can be purchased for a small fee from the PTDC resort in Kalam, and boating is also possible in the lake. A boat ride is an absolute must for visitors, and it only takes about 30 minutes.
There are a lot of wonderful waterfalls near Kalam. Most of them are in the forests that surround the area, and seeing them should be a priority for visitors. The source of these waterfalls are mostly the glaciers that can be found in the mountains nearby.
Overnight
The city of Bahrain is about between 40 and 50 kilometers south of Kalam. It is another popular riverside resort, with bazaars worth exploring for their handicrafts. It’s also a nice place for travelers to spend their evening. Another place to consider staying is Miandam. Miandam is a calm and peaceful hill resort in the Swat Valley. This place is very beautiful and can be a bit cold. There are several mountain springs in the region lined by lovely trees that make for fantastic walks.
