Kingston Things To Do
Kingston is the capital of Jamaica, and sits on the southeastern coast of the island. While in Kingston, hike up Strawberry Hill, walk amongst the ruins of Spanish Town, lounge under an umbrella on Hellshire Beach, and visit Bob Marley’s childhood home.
Strawberry Hill
Strawberry Hill is a luxury resort nestled in the Blue Mountains. The views are spectacular. On a clear day, which is nearly everyday in Jamaica, one can see every inch of the beauty that Kingston has to offer. Days here are spent relaxing in infinity pools, hiking up lush forest trails to waterfalls, and sipping delicious rum punch with your travel companions. While blissful, the resort isn’t cheap. If can’t afford to stay here, it’s still worth a visit.
Spanish Town
Spanish Town is the second largest city in Jamaica, behind Kingston. As the name suggests, it once served as the capital of the Spanish settlement. Serving as Spain’s colonial capital from 1534 to 1655, it was called Villa de la Vega before the Spanish were defeated by the English, who eventually referred to the settlement as Spanish Town. Today, you can look out to the ocean from the fort windows, admire the palm trees and tropical fauna, and get a glimpse back into what the island looked like hundreds of years ago. Spanish town is only 12 miles west of Kingston, so its a short drive.
Hellshire Beach
Hellshire Beach is the largest and most visited beach in Kingston. There you can explore the clear blue waters, walk along the white and black sand, and soak in the sun in peace. Hellshire can get quite busy at peak times of the year, so try to arrive early to claim a spot on the beach. Local vendors sell fried fish, and a number of bars are within walking distance.
Bob Marley Home
Know worldwide as the King of Reggae, Bob Marley grew up in Trenchtown, Kingston. Even if you’ve never listened to reggae, you’ve probably heard of him. Marley was a hero for generations of Jamaicans, and his music continues to be widely popular. For around $10, you can tour his former home and see where Marley created many of his greatest hits. After you visit his home, open your ears and listen to some of the live music in Kingston. Without much effort, you can stumble upon a local band at a bar or restaurant.
