As the first town in the first state, there is a lot of history to be found in Lewes. History aside, there are also plenty of other things to do.

Exploring Historical Lewes

The town of Lewes has a nice walking tour which includes the shops along Second Street, Victorian houses, the harbor, a museum, a historic church and graveyard. Second Street is Lewes’ main street and it’s straight out of a travel brochure or postcard. There is also a great craft fair and farmer’s market in town.

Check Out Fisherman’s Wharf

You can’t come to Lewes and not check out the canal and the wharf. There are several waterfront restaurants, and an endless parade of commercial and private boats. Visitors can hop on one of several fishing boats – charter and headboats are both available. There are also dolphin/whale watches and different types of cruises available. Beware though, while some companies advertise times for cruises, they will not go out unless they meet a minimum number of people. Even if you have a Groupon, they might not honor it and tell you to come back another time.

If you’re lucky, you might get to see the Kalmar Nykel Tall Ship that is a Dutch ship from the 16^th century. It does sail around the East Coast, so it’s not always docked. Or, check out the Junction and Breakwater Trail. Want to explore beyond downtown? There’s Cape Henlopen State Park, only a short drive away. Gorgeous beaches, biking and hiking trails, camping and fishing.

For a day excursion, take the 17-mile crossing on the Lewes-Cape May Ferry (85 minutes each way), stop in the southern-most part of New Jersey and then sail back (check schedules for trip times). Cape May is amazing!
