Menaggio is a lovely little Italian town on Lake Como. In the summer, you can take a boat cruise on Lake Como and see the other towns along the lakeshore.

Monumento alla Tessitrice

Take a walk along Menaggio’s lakeside promenade and you will find a monument set among the flower beds. The monument was created by Francesco Somaini, a resident of Lomazzo on Lake Como (1926 – 2005). Lake Como is famous for its silk, and the sculpture honors the women silk weavers of the area. One of the oldest and most prestigious mills stands nearby. Monumento alla Tessitrice was sculpted between 1989 and 1990 and was donated by Mariola Mantero Frontini.

Not far from the Monumento alla Tessitrice on Menaggio’s lakeside promenade, you will find another monument – Ai Caduti del Mare. This piece honors the fallen soldiers of the region.

Castle of Vezio

Visit Castle Vezio, perched on a hill in Varenna. The walk up is nice and the views are beautiful. There are trained hawks and owls inside the castle courtyard, and between 4 and 6 pm you can watch the hawks flying and offer your hand for them to land on. The hawks are chained to perches for the rest of the day. You can get up close to admire them and pet them if you’re brave. There was a birder who looked after the hawks and was happy to answer questions about them. There is a small entrance fee.
