Mersing Things to Do
Located on the mouth of the Mersing River in Malaysia, Mersing serves as a gateway to the islands in the Seribuat Archipelago. This town also has many things to do and see on its own. Both on land and by sea, a trip to Mersing delights all the senses: whether strolling the beaches, sampling the local cuisine, or enjoying the town.
The Town
In many ways, Mersing is a sleepy little fishing village. Understanding the area and its regional islands is made easier by the Mersing Marine Park Centre. The Centre serves as an excellent place to gather information about the entire area as well as the town. They have an exhibition hall that shows off the wildlife and sea life present here. Staffers are happy to answer any questions travelers may have. A trip the waterfront afterwards can be an ideal way to see in the wild what the museum exhibits demonstrate.
Local shops have many goods that you can stock up on if you’re planning a trip to other islands. Look for lower prices than what you’ll typically find in other parts of Malaysia. The jetty area makes an ideal place to grab a quick meal or just sit and watch as the sun goes down over the harbor.
Ocean Fun
Mersing has some spectacularly colorful local waters. If you love to dive, this is the place. While you can try on your own, you can also work with a local area diving instructor as a guide who leads tours here or can simply make sure you have the right equipment for your needs. There is a narrow channel in the city that makes for an ideal diving spot. Once you’re done diving, on Saturdays locals offer a barbecue that includes everything from lamb to crab. If you like hot sauces, you’re in luck: Try the local variation on fried cakes hot off the grill.
Air Papan Beach
One of the most popular beaches in the area is known as Air Papan Beach. This is where you can find lots of chalets devoted to offering tourist accommodations at a cheap price. There’s a village homestay program that allows you to spend time with locals at their own homes for a small fee. if you’re here during early spring, you can participate in the Pesta Air Papan festival that takes place every May 1st. Food, fun and organized games bring lots of locals and international travelers to this lovely beach.
