Protaras Things to Do
With long sandy beaches and turquoise crystal waters, Protaras, Cyprus is a place to splash, swim and relax. In addition to water sports, things to do include: strolling, colorful water shows, and hiking to see the sun set.
Beaches
Protaras has countless places to splash, swim, snorkel and scuba. Even if you go in October, it will feel like June or July. The beaches will be crowded and the water the perfect temperature. Don’t swim for days at the same beach. There are so many beaches for you to explore you will be surprised each time with what you find!
With its immense stretch of sand and shallow turquoise water, Fig Tree Bay Beach is the most popular beach in Protaras. It is great for small children and beach sports. The water is crystal clear and there are ample restaurants right by the beach.
Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco, is a headland in the southeastern part of the island of Cyprus, between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras. It is a protected nature park. From the cliff’s high points, you can see amazing sights. It is a favorite spot for lovers of diving and snorkeling.
Roam with Your Camera
Stroll the island and explore the area around you. You’ll see impressive estates, green palm trees heavy with red dates, and beautiful bays with unbelievably calm crystal waters. There are hidden gems on the coast, so take along your camera. You will stop every few minutes for a photo! Wear sunscreen and a hat and bring water!
Climb to the Church
In between sunbathing, swimming and strolling, head to Profitis Elias Church for the history and the view. Although modern, this church was built in the Byzantine style to replace a small room that was being used as a church. It is well worth the walk to the church and the climb to the top (about 100 steep stone steps) as from the top there is a breathtaking view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside. Take a picnic! For those not used to the extreme heat of Cyprus, the hike might be taxing. Find out when the church closes and plan your climb for late afternoon when temperatures drop. In the evenings the church is lit up. Sunsets from there are magnificent.
See the Magic Dancing Waters
At night enjoy the colorful flaming water-jets of the Magic Dancing Waters show. This laser/volcano/water show is set to music and lasts about one hour. It is a hit with families. You are allowed to use your camera and take video so that you can show folks back home the impressive spectacle! Food is available for purchase but both meals and drinks can be expensive. It is worth getting there early to get good seats.
