Things to Do in Wexford
If you happen to go to Wexford in October, you will catch the famous opera festival, experience a glimpse of rich Irish history and taste the beauty of thousands of migrating waterfowls.
The Irish National Heritage Park
The site found at Ferrycarrig will give you a glimpse of deep Irish history since the town was founded by Vikings in 800AD with exhibits spanning 9000 years. It is home to the crannogs, Viking houses, monasteries and Norman forts.
Visit the Johnstown Castle Gardens
The castle, built in the 1800’s, is not open to visitors as it now houses an agricultural college, but the grounds are open to the public. You can walk around the grounds or visit the Peacock Tea Room. There is also the Irish Agricultural Museum with exhibits on the potato and the Great Famine.
Visit Kilmore Quay
This site located approximately 7 miles from Wexford is a picturesque fishing village. Visitors enjoy watching both pleasure craft and fishing boats. Sometimes the friendly fishermen will give freshly caught fish to some lucky visitors. The village has a terrific selection of quaint cottages, seafood restaurants, and pubs that serve great food in a casual setting.
Templars Church and Graveyard
This site is the most stunning place to explore. The remains of this Church are found in Templetown in the ring of Hook neighborhood just before you reach the Hook peninsula, overlooking the sea. Originally, the Church was built by the Knights Hospitallers who occupied the lands after Knights Templars disbanded in the 1300’s. The graveyard surrounding the Church ruins is a wealth of fascinating information.
Visit Tintern Abbey
Founded in 1200 by Willian the Earl Marshall this Cistercian abbey was named after Tintern in Wales. At the site, you will experience rich history including the remains of the chapel, cloister, nave and chancel tower.
Take some photos at the John Barry Memorial Statue
The towering statue of Commodore John Barry who was the founder of the US Navy back in the 1700s was donated to Wexford by the USA and overlooks Wexford Harbor in Crescent Quay.
