Whidbey Island Things to Do
Whidbey Island in Washington state is a popular vacation spot known for its parks, festivals, and natural beauty. Take a look at a few of the things that should be on your must-do list when you plan your visit to Whidbey Island.
Deception Pass
The Deception Pass bridge is what links Whidbey Island to the mainland. It’s also an activity in itself. There are places to park on both sides of the bridge if you want to get out of your car and look at the view. The view is well worth seeing – you can get an eyeful of the mountains, the bluff, the beaches, and the water from the bridge. You can also walk across the bridge instead of driving, if you want to get a better view.
Near Deception Pass, you can find spots for fishing, biking, or hiking. Trails that begin near Deception Pass will take you to Puget Sound or Pass lake.
Farmer’s Market
If you’re interested in local food and crafts, check out the booths at the Bayview Farmers Market. There, you’ll find locally grown produce, homemade goodies, and various arts and crafts. It’s a fun way to sample some of the local cuisine, pick up souvenirs, and meet some of the local inhabitants of Whidbey Island.
State Parks
The Fort Ebey State Park is a great place to go for hiking. There you can find trails for walking and trails that can be used by bicycles. The hiking trails offer great views of the bluffs and water, perfect for a photo opportunity. On the water at Fort Ebey, you can enjoy surfing and para-gliding. You can also view eagles at Lake Pondilla. If you’re interested in historic sites, you should check out Battery 248. This was once a gun battery designed to protect Puget Sound. The guns were removed after WWII, but you can still see the old gun emplacements in the banks.
Fort Casey State Park is a camping park where you can get excellent views of Admiralty Inlet and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. There is an artillery post on the coast that has historic guns on display. There’s also a historic lighthouse to explore.
These are just a few of the attractions that you should definitely check out when you visit Whidbey Island.
