Zante Things To Do
Known to the Greeks as Zakynthos and to the Italians as Zante, this island is a popular tourist destination. The island is alive with color and light, making it the ideal getaway any time of the year.
The Town
One of the best places to start is with a visit to Zante Town. Here, you’ll find several museums, including the Museum Solomos and Kalvas, and the New Museum which houses artwork from the Byzantine period. Many travelers find the town to be an authentic Greek small town. Bring a bicycle or explore it on foot. The relaxing harbor makes a nice change from the island’s beaches. Here, you can hire a private boat for a tour around the island. The Church of St. Dennis is at one end of the town while Solomos Square and St. Mark’s Square lie at the other. From the port, you can catch a boat back to the mainland or to other islands.
Laganas Village
Another area well worth visiting is the Laganas Village. Highly popular during the summer, Laganas offers a beautiful, wide beach with plenty of shops. At night, it comes alive with music and dancing, making it the perfect spot for anyone in search of a good time. These beach are also home to the local turtle population’s breeding ground. You can often see them, but officials may ask you to be quiet and stay at a distance to allow the hatchlings to make their trip from the beach to the sea. Many turtles are used to people, so they may come to you as you swim.
The Best Beaches
The beaches on Zante are considered some of the best in Greece. Smuggler’s Cove is perhaps the most photographed beach in all of Greece. Be aware that it is lovely but the water is deep can be cold. Another famous beach here is the Navagio beach. Accessible only by boat, aim to visit it during the afternoon as this is when it gets sun. The island is home to many beaches so it is possible to visit several in a single day. Some of the local and tourist favorites are charming Porto Zoro, wide Gerakas and pleasantly warm Porto Roma.
