Warnings and Dangers in Alanya: Areas to Avoid
History comes alive in this ancient Mediterranean town. September through November are great times to visit the area to participate in the many festivals the city hosts. Take note of some cautionary tips listed below to keep your journey safe and enjoyable.
Fair Fares on Taxi Rides
Taxis are well regulated here the same as in the U.S. They must post their prices and give you a receipt if you ask for it, but beware! Some taxi drivers try to ask for a higher price anyway. If the price seems too high and they don’t want to give you the recipe, it is your right to refuse to pay to them. In case of an argument, you can call police.
Taking Pictures and Advice from the Locals
Some people will charge you a price for taking your picture or telling you about a ‘short cut’ to your destination. Don’t pay them. All tourist rules are in place here. Remember the important rules like it is not advisable to walk around town late at night alone or tell people where you’re staying and other information about you. Also, don’t carry all your valuables on you and all in your bag. If someone steals the bag, you have nothing.
Watch Out for Motorists
Maybe where you currently live pedestrians have the right away. In Alanya, motorists do not stop for pedestrians. There are people riding bikes and mopeds in all directions. As your mom would say, look both ways before you cross the street. Be aware of your surroundings always. Sometimes people will try to follow you. If this happens, run into the nearest business and ask for help.
Skimming Machines
Some ATMs will have skimming devices in them potentially costing you big time with your bank. The best advice is to look for machines that are in good condition with no signs of tampering. Even if there are other people using the machine, don’t use it if it looks battered. It may be wise to check your account balance often for a couple of weeks and report any extra activity immediately.
