Carry Local Currency

Many locals believe that visitors, especially Westerners, are unaware of the exchange rate and therefore will up their prices if their customer has only USD. It is still a good idea to carry some USD with you, but become aquainted with the current exchange rate before you arrive and how much necessities like food and transportation generally cost. Don’t be afraid to stand your ground and bargain if you feel that you are being scammed.

Don’t Fall For High Transportation Fares

Pulau Batam’s bus system and plethora of taxis makes it easy to get around, but unfortunately drivers have been known to scam tourists with high fares. A good way to avoid this is to, again, carry only local currency and pay close attention to what other riders are paying. And when it comes to taxis, settle the price with the driver before you actually get on your way.

Book Hotels and Tours Online

To avoid any unnecessary charges, book all of your accommodations and organized activities online (whenever possible, at least). If you cannot pay online, it is a good idea to print out the booking confirmation page and bring it with you as proof of the price you were quoted.
