Baton Rouge Warnings and Dangers
When visiting Louisiana’s capital city you’ll be drawn into the southern charm. However, there are some things you should know about in Baton Rouge that aren’t so charming.
Flash Floods
Baton Rouge is flat and drainage, for the most part, is poor. A typical thunderstorm with even brief, heavy rain can turn the city’s streets into rivers and lakes. During heavy rains, slow down and do your best to look ahead. You don’t want to plow into high waters and stall your car or even worse be swept away. Some notorious areas for urban flash flooding are along River Road under the Mississippi River Bridge, some areas in the Garden District and Brightside in south Baton Rouge.
Panhandlers
If you are strolling through some of the historic neighborhoods of downtown Baton Rouge, be prepared to see some panhandlers. A notorious location is the convenience store on the corner of Government and St. Louis Streets. They are harmless for the most part, but you never can be too sure. Always be on your guard.
Game Nights
Game Nights are a big deal in Baton Rouge and the locals are proud of their teams; so if you go to a game enjoy it and have fun. If not, avoid getting stuck in game day traffic at all costs. You may be road blocked or detoured in a swarm of vehicles for hours.
Parade Beads
The Spanish Town Mardi Gras parade is Baton Rouge’s biggest, and it winds down some narrow streets in the old Spanish Town neighborhood in Baton Rouge. Watch your head! Some of those sacks of beads that are thrown are heavy enough to give you a concussion. Watch for stray arms and elbows too. The parade is fun, but be careful.
Baton Rouge can also get pretty windy, especially after a storm. Be careful of wind when going up to the observation deck of the Capitol Building. When it’s really bad, they will close the deck.
