Tips on Bonaire Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Bonaire Warnings and Dangers

Exquisite Bonaire is one of the world’s premier diving destinations. When heading out to the beautiful waters, keep in mind some of the dangers in the depths. Be aware of stingers both on land in and in the sea for a safer trip.

Wildlife

Scenic Washington Slagbaai National Park has about fourteen thousand acres of plants. Home to a former plantation, it’s also a wonderful place to explore on foot. Just keep in mind you need a good pair of walking shoes. Dangerous cacti are everywhere.Their spines can get lodged on the ground and in your feet.

The shore off the coast of Bonaire have small plants known as a fire coral. Clearly visible by their bright orange color, fire coral should be avoided at all costs. Keep an eye out for them underwater. If you accidentally brush up against a piece of the plant, rinse out the area with vinegar and gently pull out the stingers. Another object to keep in mind are the long spined sea urchins. These large black objects can be seen in many shallow waters. Avoid stepping on them as the stingers can also get embedded in your skin. Wear thick-soled shoes on land and thick fins in the sea.

Rough Surf

The eastern and western parts of the island have rougher surf than other parts of the island. This is also where the beach is at its rockiest. Unless you’re a very strong surfer, it’s best to stick to the waters on the other parts of the island where the tides are more gentle.
