Gary Warnings and Dangers
Gary Indiana is a major Rust Belt industrial city. With this area of the country hit hard during the recession, some problem areas have popped up in these manufacturing locations. The same is true for Gary.

Rough Spots Throughout
Gary is a location where it isn’t just one specific corridor to avoid. The rough spots are more hit and miss, where you can walk in a good part of town and then, two blocks later, it is completely run down. This is more or less the nature of a city like Gary. When the recession hit certain businesses would fold up, which would bring less traffic to that particular block, and often times neighboring businesses would go out of business as well. Due to this, it really isn’t possible to completely avoid the rough spots, you just need to practice caution when in Gary.
Only Park in a Garage
Open street parking is generally not recommended. If you’re running into a deli or another small restaurant that you can see your car from then it might be alright, but it is recommended to park in a garage. These locations have more security and it is difficult to reach your vehicle without anyone noticing the break in. So, when staying in Gary always look for the parking garages.
Several casinos have popped up in Gary in recent years. These locations have parking structures and are probably the most ideal parking destinations. Not only are the parking garages covered but you’ll find more security here than anywhere else.
Practicing Caution
Downtown Gary has more dining and bar options than what you might find in other areas of the city. Still, it is necessary to practice caution anywhere in the city, especially at night. As rough stretches can come and go, you don’t want to walk too far from your vehicle. Walk in a group and avoid walking in areas without proper lighting.
Drug use is also a problem in Gary. If you’re out at night and walk, you likely will see drug use. Marijuana is present, but so are harder drugs. Most of this has been pushed out of downtown, so if you stay downtown you may not come across it as much. Either way, just be careful when out and be mindful of your surroundings. It is recommended to simply take a marked cab or Uber between destinations.
Easy to Navigate
The street system is rather easy to navigate. It is mostly straight avenues and there aren’t too many one-way roads, so if you do need to drive somewhere you shouldn’t have much of a problem finding your location. As long as you remember to park in the closest parking garage.
