Geneva Warnings and Dangers
Geneva is a major metropolitan city in Switzerland, famous for its many cultural sites and attractions. Take a look at some warnings that will help you plan a safe and fun stay in this fascinating city.
Pickpockets
Although Geneva is typically a safe city for travelers, it does have its share of pickpockets. As in most large cities, it’s best to be alert and aware of the people around you when you’re out on the street. Take note of anyone who seems to be watching or following you. Be especially cautious when leaving a bank, ATM, or currency trader. Don’t carry large amounts of cash, don’t flash cash or valuables where they can be seen, and be aware of tactics that pickpockets use, such as bumping into you on one side while someone on the other side of you grabs your wallet.
If you are robbed or pickpocketed, be sure to make a report with the local police and ask for a copy. If you need to fill out an insurance claim, you’ll need to submit a copy of the report for documentation.
Police Impersonators
Some travelers have reported a scam by people posing as police officers. They may ask to see ID and instruct you to hand over your wallet. Then they return the wallet, minus some of the money. If approached by a person claiming to be a police officer, you should ask to see some identification before handing anything over, especially if the person claiming to be a police officer is not in uniform.
Money
Some businesses in Geneva won’t take Euros or American dollars, and those that do may charge you an extra fee for taking them, so it’s best to have your money converted to Suisse francs. You’ll find more favorable exchange rates at currency trading shops than at major banks.
Be sure to keep these cautions in mind when you’re visiting Geneva.
