Greece is an ancient country that provided the cultural foundation of everything from theater to our very concept of democracy. While modern day Greece is a wonderful place to see where it all began, it does have some dangers that travelers should take care to avoid.
Greece Warnings And Dangers
When traveling to Greece, be aware of dangerous animals and issues with regional transportation. Local wildlife can be just as hazardous as local roads.
Dangerous Animals
The mild Greek climate is not just attractive to human beings. It’s also attractive to creatures that can pose a potentially serious problem, especially in the sea which are often full of sea urchins, spiky creatures you don’t want to step on. On land, the Ochia is a poisonous snake that can be found in many parts of Greece. If you think you’ve been bitten, get immediate medical attention. Scorpions also exist on many islands, so check your luggage and bedding carefully. Donkeys and horses are used to pull things all over the islands, so keep your eye out for droppings. There are also plenty of mosquitos so make sure you are prepared if you’ll be spending a lot of time outside.
Be Careful When Traveling the Greek Roads
Many of the roads in Greece are narrow and winding, so be careful when driving. You may be driving on very steep cliffs with roads that are not always well kept. The same applies when walking in many Greek towns. Stairs are often extremely steep so you should watch where you’re walking at every step. Getting around Greece often makes taking a ferry. The winds in Greece can be fierce, so make sure you have your bearings so you don’t get wet and wind blown before you reach your destination. Taking a cab is often a great way to get around, especially given the condition of many local roads. However, make sure you negotiate the fare in advance.
