Many locals simply refer to them as “gangsters” and well-traveled tourists know to not even bother giving them the time of day.

They are not only territorial about the beaches but also about the women who travel to the area as well. Whether it is buying them drinks or talking about their woes, they will try to find a way to scam you.

Beggars

While traveling in Hikkaduwa, be aware of homeless asking for money. Many people beg for money, claiming tsunamis or floods have hit their home when this is simply not the case. If that doesn’t work, they will play on your emotions by telling you stories of their mother or children who need operations and they simply cannot afford it. You may be roped into helping them by being invited to their humble homes, observing their sick children, and handing over plenty of cash just to learn that their kids were never actually sick to begin with. This is a common scam in the area and one to be aware of.
