Ko Phangan Warnings and Dangers
Known for its noisy Full Moon Party occurring every month in Haad Rin, Ko Pha Ngan is also famous for its plentiful coconut trees. Follow a few guidelines that are sure to make your stay a positive experience.
Always Wear a Helmet While Riding a Motorbike
Do not forget to wear your helmet while riding a motorbike. Besides the fact that it is unsafe to ride without a helmet, Ko Phangan has strict rules mandating a 200 baht fine if you are caught riding without wearing proper headgear. Police hide in hidden areas and will suddenly appear and demand that you pay a fine on the spot.
Do Not Use Illegal Drugs in Ko Phangan
Even though many people use drugs in the open, it is a good idea to remember that undercover police look for foreigners using drugs. Whether the drug is opium, cannabis, mushrooms or MDMA/Ecstacy, you will need to pay a fine. The penalty for smoking cannabis is $2,000. The fines are even worse if the police catch you with other drugs. If you do not have money, the police will admit you to jail immediately and you will need to have a trial.
Swimming on the West Coast Has its Perils
The water is filled with coral. The coral has very sharp edges that can literally slice open your arms, feet or any other part of your body.
Do Not Drink Sang Som
Avoid the temptation to drink Sang Som. This alcoholic beverage is very addicting and can cause you to forget important events. If you cherish your memory, do not sip this beverage.
Watch Out for Stray Dogs That Bite
In most areas of Thailand, you will see numerous dogs that are not on leashes. Even though many of these dogs have owners, the pets are still allowed to roam without any hindrances. Evidently, Thailand does not have a leash law. These dogs have been known to bite tourists. Do not pet or befriend any dogs.
