Tips on Kuala Lumpur Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Kuala Lumpur Warnings or Dangers

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia. Its soaring skyscrapers dot the modern skyline, but like any other city, there are certain dangers and warnings that tourists need to be aware of. Below, we have put together a short list of some dangers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Taxi Fares

There are a few different circumstances where tourists should be made aware of taxi driver scams. One scam occurs late at night once the nightlife in Kuala Lumpur picks up. Many taxi drivers will agree to take tourists back to their hotels after a night out, but only if the tourist agrees to not use the meters. The result is the tourist will be charge an exorbitant fare for a short drive back. Another scam that takes place is that taxi drivers will used a fixed price to get to popular destinations. Instead of using the meters, taxi drivers will take advantage of tourists who are not familiar with the actual distance to get to the destination. Once the taxi arrives, the driver will request an outrageous price. Lastly, tourists are advised to never take a taxi from the selection of taxis that sit outside the hotel. It is always better to take taxis from the taxi stand. These taxi drivers are more likely to use the meter and charge an acceptable fare.

Be Aware

Although Kuala Lumpur is a popular site for tourists, it is important to always be aware of what is going on. This is especially true if traveling or walking alone.  It is imperative that tourists keep their head up and stay aware. There are many reported incidents of muggings and robberies when people are walking alone. Most of the time, a person is distracted with his or her head down, texting or paying attention to something else. Be especially aware when withdrawing money from ATMs. Keep an eye on who is around the area and make note if anyone appears to be following close behind. Always alert security if your suspect something does not feel right.

Monkey Trouble

The monkeys at Batu Caves in particular can be quite mischievous. Many tourists frequent the adorable monkeys, but now the monkeys have become tame and overly confident around humans. If tourists approach too quickly or do not give the monkeys treats, the monkeys can become quite aggressive, even showing their teeth! The monkeys will also grab anything they can get their hands on so be sure to protect any belongings including keys, sunglasses, or purse.

Traffic Jams

Traffic in Kuala Lumpur can be quite difficult to navigate. The problem lies with the design of the roads and the types of vehicles traveling on the roads. Often, drivers will run red lights, swerve in front of other drivers, or cut the line of cars by making their own traffic laws. Also be aware of the speedy motor bikes that will dart in and out of cars to try to weave through traffic. Be patient when managing these daily traffic jams.
