Liverpool Warnings or Dangers
Liverpool is a port city on the northwest coast of England, and has become a tourist center. The city is known as the home of the Beatles, and was the port of registry for the Titanic. There are many things to see in this British city, but like any large city, it has big city problems.
Begging
These are generally not dangerous people, but Liverpool does seem to have more than its share of people begging on the street. Local authorities say it is best to not give to them, as many are looking for money for drugs, and England has a large safety net for people. There are also people selling magazines, and they have a badge. If they do not have a badge they are not legitimate magazine sellers. St Luke’s Church on Bold Street and local bus stations are common places to encounter people asking for small change. These people tend to be more of a hassle than an actual physical danger.
Petty crime
Especially in the city center, you are likely to be very safe. If you stay in the tourist areas, you are very unlikely to be a victim of a violent crime. However, there are always thieves looking for an opportunity. Protect your valuables and be on the lookout for pickpockets. You are unlikely to be robbed, but if you are careless with your property, someone may seize the opportunity to steal something. Like any large city, don’t go out alone at night and try to not look like a tourist. The areas around Toxteth, Dingle, and Wavertree have a reputation for rough characters, and can be dangerous at times.
Weekend warriors and alcohol
The city center is safe but can get rowdy on weekends, especially if there is a game in town. Young people flock to town on the weekends and there is a lot of partying. Usually it is all in fun, but things do get out of hand at times, especially when the games don’t go well. There have been some reports of drinks being spiked as well, so be careful when you are in a bar or in public. Also be warned that there are certain places in the city center that do not allow alcohol; in such places you can be fined heavily for public consumption of alcohol.
Sports
Most people love sports, but people in Liverpool take it to the extreme at times. People can get passionate about sports, and there is a huge rivalry between Liverpool and Everton. It is best to not talk sports with the locals, and don’t get involved in a debate, especially when these two soccer teams are part of the conversation.
