Tips on Madrid Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Madrid Warnings And Dangers

Madrid is the heart of Spain. As a capital city home to millions, it does present some problems for any traveler. You’ll enjoy the many sites of historic Madrid more when you pay close attention to certain details.

Demonstrations

As the capital of the country, Madrid is also the center of the government. Keep this in mind when you travel. Demonstrations and protests are common. Check in advance as such demonstrations may impede your access to certain city streets. Avoid joining them as foreigners are not allowed to protest against government policies.

Popular Things to Do

If you are planning to visit the city’s famous Prado art museum, be aware that admission is free on Sundays. You can save money then but you should get there as early as possible to get a jump on the long lines. Another famous attraction is the regional paella. This delicious dish of seafood, sausage and rice is very popular. Look for places that attract natives if you want the authentic version. Tourist traps are everywhere when it comes to local food and drink. Avoid places catering to Americans if you can and pick out those that have menus in Spanish. Waiters will be happy to translate any dishes you don’t know so you don’t get caught ordering something you don’t like.

Be Careful on the Metro

Madrid has a lovely and extensive metro. If you are going to use it to get around, remember to be aware of your surroundings and know where you’re going. You don’t want to board the wrong line or get lost. The subways are a popular hangout for thieves all year long so make sure you keep your baggage close to your body.

Loud Noises

Like many other cities, Madrid is a city in the process of constant expansion. Construction is everywhere you look. You need to look carefully to make sure you’re not stepping on roads that have been carved up for yet more construction. You also need to bear in mind that construction means loud noise, often early in the morning. If you’re sleeping in a hotel in the city, make sure you bring a pair of earplugs.

Other Issues

Other minor issues abound in this central city of Spain. It can a lot hotter than you might think in the summer. Make sure you have plenty of sunscreen on hand to compensate. Some museums are air conditioned and some are not. Consider visiting during the fall or spring rather than the height of summer. Many locals choose to take their vacation during this time so a lot of places may be closed. If possible, avoid going on during the heat of midday. You should also avoid driving on Friday nights if you can as this is the time of greatest local traffic.
