Marseille Warnings and Dangers
Julia Child herself spent time in Marseille enjoying the region’s intensely rich cuisine. However, while Marseille has much to enjoy, the city has some notable problems. Women, in particular, may want to be especially careful if they traveling alone. Other issues that can be problem include minor criminal activities such as pickpockets and minor thefts. Just like any other big city, it is important to exercise classic common sense and be aware of your surroundings at all time.

Getting Around the City
Marseille is one of the largest cities by areas in France. So you may want to consider renting a car, especially if you are staying on the outskirts of the city. Trains also run everywhere and taxis ply the streets as well. Crime is often linked to cars and trains. Keep any car locked at all times and do not keep much in it. There are several major subways in the area. This is often where thieves congregate. Be particularly cautious when walking around subway stations. Stations are not always lit well. Consider taking a taxi if you are traveling here late at night as they are often safer than subways and metro stations such as the Marseille-St-Charles railway station. Walking is a nice way to see sea views and enjoy the area’s hills. Be aware that Marseille has many narrow streets where a traveler can be mugged from behind. Use caution when walking down such streets. Avoid lingering unless you’re in a store or cafe.
Special Precautions
One of the most unexpected dangers is that of the world famous mistral. This fierce wind comes down to the city during certain parts of the year. Be aware that the wind may be strong enough to make it hard to walk and may even knock you down. Women should take special care when visiting this city. Many young men are not always respectful and may harass a woman traveling alone. Another issue that may impact a traveler’s life are strikes. Strikes are not uncommon in this city. Municipal workers may go on strike, causing buses and trains to run late or even not at all. Read the news to find out if strikes are imminent. Always have a backup plan when visiting. The area’s port region is a very popular part of town. You can rent a boat to go on the waters. Get all terms in writing and be very careful when walking through the port as it can be where pickpockets gather.
