Mozambique Warnings and Dangers
Mozambique is a country in Southeast Africa that is home to extensive natural resources and has increasingly drawn tourists from around the world. However, visitors should be aware of warnings to obey in order to stay safe.
Be Wary of Local Traffic Officials
If you travel by car, keep cash with you. Visitors are often stopped and told something is wrong with their vehicles, regardless of the shape of the car. Although you should try and avoid being pulled over, you’ll need money to hand over if you are. There are other conditions in which you might be pulled over. All the towns along the roads have an 80-kilometer speed limit as you approach that quickly switch to a 60-kilometer limit. These are speed traps that often catch unsuspecting visitors.
Money
Visa cards are widely accepted across Mozambique, but MasterCard is extremely limited. Many ATMs do not accept MasterCard in addition to stores. If you intend to use a MasterCard to pay for accommodations, then check ahead of time to make sure it is accepted. Also, make sure to exchange your money at the border. If you don’t change your money at the border when leaving the country, you will be stuck with it.
Malaria
Make sure you take the correct malaria medication when traveling to the country, which you can determine by consulting with your doctor. Another way to keep malaria carrying insects away is through the use of spray repellant. A combination of both will help you avoid contracting this vicious disease.
