Driving Dangers

In Namibia, many of the roads are sand and gravel, not paved highways. If you’re used to North American or European highways, driving on Namibian roads might take some getting used to.

It’s important to realize that you won’t get the same traction with your tires on sand or gravel as you will on a paved road. Moderate your speed and give yourself a wider turning distance than usual. Also, be aware that animals may dart across the road without warning.

Snakes and Scorpions

While Namibia’s local wildlife is part of the attraction of the area, it’s still important to be aware of the dangers posed by some of that wildlife. Snakes and scorpions present a particular danger to campers. Namibia is home to several varieties of venomous snakes and scorpions.

When camping, be sure to close your tent up properly and don’t leave any backpacks or other gear open that a snake or insect could crawl into. Even your shoes should be sealed in a bag or the tops covered with socks when unattended.

ATM Thefts

Although Namibia has relatively low crime rates, thefts at the ATM are unfortunately common. When approaching an ATM, be alert for strangers and aware of your surroundings. Choose ATMs in well-lit and populated areas.

Don’t force your card into a machine – if it doesn’t seem to fit properly, the machine may have been tampered with. Beware of strangers offering assistance. Secure your cash and card in your wallet or purse immediately after your transaction, and keep your wallet or purse close to your body.
