Strong Tides and Undercurrents
Beautiful and white, Pensacola beaches are a sight to behold, but they can also be dangerous if you swim at the wrong time. Each year, several people drown because they are unaware of the strong tides and undercurrents associated with Pensacola beaches. Fortunately, each beach is equipped with a colored-flag system that will alert you when danger is present. A green flag indicates that it’s safe to swim.
Lurking Sharks and Attacks
Shark sightings are common in Pensacola, especially on Santa Rosa Island. While most sharks are seen in the distance, some do get close to people and can act aggressively. Shark attacks are not unheard of. If you swim in the waters of Pensacola, remain vigilant. Keep your eyes open for sharks in the distance. If one comes close, move away.
Since you won’t see every shark in the water, it’s a good idea to swim in groups as sharks like to attack individuals. If a shark gets close, do not make sudden movements. It will likely swim off on its own.
Hurricanes and Inclement Weather
Pensacola is prone to summer hurricanes. In fact, the town was destroyed twice by hurricanes. In most cases, you will have several days’ notice of a hurricane. Heed all weather warnings and evacuate the area if necessary. Do not try to ride out the storm or remain in Pensacola until the storm hits.
