Pulau Perhentian Kecil Warnings and Dangers
Pulau Perhentian Kecil is an island off the coast of Malaysia that’s popular among divers, snorkelers, and eco travelers. Before you plan a visit to the island, familiarize yourself with its potential dangers.
Cash Availability and Theft
It can be tough to find cash on the island when you need it. There are few, if any, ATM machines. Additionally, many of the shops, restaurants, dive instructors, and other vendors do not take credit cards and handle only cash. That means that you need to bring enough cash with you to last during your stay.
However, the need for cash does present a security problem. Hotel rooms near the beach are very basic and many lack room safes. Visitors have had money and other items stolen from their hotel rooms. On the beach, tourists should be alert to their surroundings, because snatch-and-grab thefts have been reported.
Your best bet is to keep your cash on your person and make sure not to display it too prominently. When swimming or snorkeling, either designate one of your traveling companions to hold your cash while you’re in the water, or invest in a waterproof pouch. Don’t leave your cash unattended on the beach.
Water Safety
If you’re interested in diving or snorkeling, plan your trip for somewhere between mid-March and mid-September. Before mid-March and after mid-September is monsoon season, which interferes with the visibility in the water. Most businesses are closed during monsoon season anyway.
When you’re in the water, keep your eyes open for jellyfish. They can be difficult to see, but they can deliver a painful sting. Even a broken tentacle that’s no longer attached to the jellyfish can sting you.
With a little advance preparation, you can make sure that your trip to Pulau Perhentian Kecil is safe and enjoyable.
