  • Runaway Bay Warnings and Dangers

  • Runaway Bay, Jamaica is a beautiful Island town located on the northern central coast. Like the rest of Jamaica, Runaway Bay is an island paradise with white sand and crystal blue water surrounded by fabulous resorts and tanning tourists. Despite its beauty, Runaway Bay can hold real danger for the unsuspecting traveler if they are unprepared.

  • Abandonment of Previous Life

  • Some travelers warn that the only danger a tourist will face at Runaway Bay is in inability to want to go back to normal life. After experiencing such a friendly and gorgeous atmosphere, many people start plotting their escape from all the responsibility back home. One traveler describes this dangerous state of mind, “Symptoms include lingering by a dive shop hoping and hinting about how many PADI instructors they really need … stuffing beachfront jerky chicken into baggies, so that you can enjoy the flavor and aroma all the way home.”

  • Unsavory Characters

  • Tourists in this area should be aware that people and businesses prey on those staying at the resorts. One such warning comes from a frequent traveler of the area to beware of Kitty Kat Nite Club and renting from the landlord that owns the property around the club. This person relays a story rich in robbery, extortion, and betrayal. After reading some of these accounts, our advice is that it is probably best to not get entangled with the local drama.

“Jamaica is poor. Outside of your resort, you are someone's livelihood. Be kind, but be prepared to be hard too. You will be offered ganja, urged to come into shops, and panhandled.” People are warned to stay clear of unlit beaches at night, to not walk alone along the whole north coast after dark, and to avoid small bars and side streets after dark.
