The sunny city of San Diego has a warm climate and makes an ideal home base from which to explore the rest of Southern California. Be aware that it also has issues that can pop up where you least expect them. When traveling and around San Diego, keep a close eye on the road. You should also be mindful of the tides in the beach and the area’s many highways.

Respect the Ocean

San Diego is a favorite destination for those who love the beach. The beaches are beautiful but they do have dangers. Rip tides are common here all year long. Be aware that backwash can also be a problem, particularly near the La Jolla area. This is when a harsh wave hits cliffs that overlook the beach. You can be swept away in both kinds of waves if you are not careful. Do not enter the beach when you see a warning sign. Some beaches permit alcohol consumption while other do not. Check in advance if you want to imbibe. Some beaches will let you surf while others do not. For example,  Tourmaline Surfing Park has been specifically set aside for the needs of surfers. This park which includes a public parking that makes it easy to get to from all parts of the city. Boardwalks are common this area. You can go skating and biking but you keep to the directed paths or you might face a fine. If you see seals sunning on the rocks at many beaches, these are not tame animals. Do not pet them.

Getting Around

The first thing you should do is invest in a really good map. San Diego exits can be confusing and misleading. The city is a lot larger than you might think. It includes many suburbs. If you are traveling on the freeway, you need to know which lane you’re going to use in order to get the exit you need. Keep in mind that San Diego is home to one of the biggest crossings in the entire country. Many people travel here between the United States and Mexico. Traffic can get heavy at times so allow enough time when you’re going anywhere near the border. If you choose to cross the border into Tijuana, keep your passports on hand at all times and be aware that crime is much higher in this city. Many people recommend not going to the  Chula Vista and Imperial Beach area. They also recommend staying away from the Barrio Logan, Normal Heights, and City Heights section of the city. The city has many train tracks that go through much of the downtown areas. Be careful when walking around near them as many of them have multiple tracks rather than just one. It’s very easy to trip.
