Getting There

There are two ways to get to Sorrento. You can drive or you can take the train. Sorrento does not have an airport. If you are planning to drive, be mindful of the area’s winding roads. The most common starting point is Naples. Driving to Sorrento from Naples is a very popular trip during the summer. Keep in mind the road to Sorrento is very narrow. You may have to make way for tour buses. Keep to the speed limit at all times as you don’t want to hit a railing and fall into the sea. If you are planning to take the train from Naples, be aware that it will take you about an hour and a half. The main station in Sorrento is often very crowded with tourists so keep an eye on your luggage as pickpockets can mingle with them. The station can be a long walk from some parts of town so consider hiring a taxi.

Up on a Hill

Sorrento, like many other towns in the area, is located high up on a hill. If you want to get to the small beach here or take a fast boat to islands nearby like Capri, there is a cliff passage that brings you down to the coast. However, this is a very steep and winding road. Be aware that walking down it can be strenuous. For a small fee, you can take a bus down the curved path. This can be a better and safer option, especially if you have small children or people with mobility issues in your party. Keep in mind the bus can get very crowded so consider not bringing too many items with you.

Tourist Crowding

This part of Italy can get particularly crowded during the summer. If you are planning to use Sorrento as a home base from which to explore the rest of the coast, consider taking the bus rather than driving. Buses are relatively cheap in Sorrento and they run frequently. However, they can get very crowded during the summer. Buy your tickets in advance so you don’t have to wait in line for a bus ticket and then wait in line again for the bus. Leave early if you are planning a trip to nearby towns like Positano. This way you get out early and see everything.
