Tips on Venice Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Venice Warnings and Dangers

The Italian city of Venice is recognized throughout the world for the many canals that cross the city. While a popular destination, tourists should watch out for certain dangers.

Pickpockets

Venice is generally not a dangerous city, so for the most part, you can walk safely by its canals and campos. However, be careful with pickpockets, who tend to gravitate toward heavily congested areas. They’re fond of tourist spots, so keep an eye on your belongings. These thieves also board the local waterbuses, so continue to remain mindful on these boats.

Pigeons

Many tourists seem to delight in feeding the local pigeons. Some even lie flat on the ground in St. Mark’s Square and cover themselves in crumbs. However, these birds can be quite a nuisance. In some parts of the city, feeding the pigeons is no longer allowed. This rule exists because the number of pigeons and their behavior led to the destruction of art pieces and building surfaces in the area.

Acqua Alta

Acqua alta, or periods of high water, is a phenomenon that generally takes place in Venice in autumn or winter. It occurs due to a combination of tidal waters and strong winds from the south. If you visit Venice during these times, the safest option is to choose a hotel in the upper part of town, close to the railway station or Piazzale Roma.
