Victoria Falls Warnings and Dangers
Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, is located on the Zambezi River in both Zimbabwe and Zambia. If you plan to visit this natural wonder, take into consideration some warnings or dangers in Victoria Falls.
Dangerous Animals and Slippery Rocks in Victoria Falls
Once you cross into Victoria Falls National Park, all bets are off. This is wild animal country and the park even warns you with a road sign that says “You are now entering Victoria Falls National park. All wild animals are unpredictable and dangerous. Walking after prescribed hours is strictly prohibited.” Most of the wild animals are nocturnal; still it’s a good idea not to veer off the walking path.
If you take a ride down the Zambezi River, keep your hands out of the water, especially in calm waters. There a many crocodiles in the river who avoid the rapids for these easy going areas. If you walk along the rocks above the falls, be careful because the constant mist makes them slippery.
Aggressive Vendors in Victoria Falls
Outside of the hotel zones are the street vendors and beggars. Violence is rare, but sometimes the sheer amount of people who want to sell you something or get a handout can feel overwhelming. Be courteous and polite and haggle with the locals, who tend to overprice their wares. If you do give money to a beggar, chances are you will be approached by many more, so keep this in mind.
Malaria and Tropical Diseases in Victoria Falls
You will need to get immunized for Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and B, Tetanus, and more to visit Victoria Falls. This area also has malaria so be sure to keep skin protected with insect repellent and clothing that covers the skin. It is also recommended to sleep with a mosquito net; something that would be provided by the hotel.
