Tips on Yogyakarta Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Yogyakarta Warnings and Dangers

Yogyakarta is a city in the southern most Island of Indonesia. Like most tropical cities, there are certain warnings and dangers to be aware of to stay safe.

Weather, Terrain, and Geological Activity

Yogyakarta is one of the most fascinating of all Indonesian cities, but it is windy, wet, crowded and occasionally quite polluted. What is more, there is an active volcano only a few miles away. In fact, a large part of the enormous city builds directly on the flanks of that volcano. Between the pollution and the unpredictable effects of the volcano, fresh air can be a problem sometimes. Asthmatics and others with special breathing needs should be aware and obtain antihistamines or other necessary countermeasures.

Taxis, Buses and Becaks

Becaks are the local bicycle pedicabs. They are easily available and will carry you nearly anywhere you want to go, but there are no set rates or prices. Be prepared to haggle or to pay whatever is asked, even though the rates can vary from anywhere between 5,000 to 10,000 rupiahs. Taxis will charge from 5,000 to 20,000 and even more, and they are not above such tricks as making a route longer to drive up the fare or operating off the meter. Buses are reliable, easily available, and far less expensive.

Beggars and Street People

The street people of Yogyakarta are not dangerous so long as all reasonable precautions are observed, but they are extremely poor and will sometimes take unethical actions against the apparently prosperous. It is safe to give money to beggars, but be careful about showing large amounts of money and take care of pickpockets. Be wary of people who ask to guide you or offer shady-sounding tours.
