Tivoli Transportation

Travel to Tivoli is quite easy from Rome via bus, taxi, and train. Located just 25 miles east of Rome, this area of Italy is very well served by several public transportation options.

Bus

The bus trip takes one hour along the A5 Autostrada, and connects Rome’s Ponte Mommolo to Tivoli. The Cotral bus leaves the station about every ten minutes and tickets cost a reasonable E1.60. Once in Tivolis local bus number 4 connects the two villas of Adrianna and Villa d’Este. It is recommended to visit Villa Adrianna first, and then to arrive at Villa d’Este later in the afternoon to enjoy the vistas during the beautiful sunset hours. The local buses can take you to all of the main sightseeing locales within the town, but the bus from Rome also has nearby stops, so it is not necessary to switch over to the local bus. When traveling from Rome the duration of the bus trip will vary due to traffic.

Train

The train takes about 45 minutes from Rome to the Tiburtina Station in Tivoli. The train route is renowned for the picturesque beauty, and many consider the trip out to Tivoli to be as enjoyable as the town itself. Be aware that the station in Tivoli is about a half hour walk from the town center, and while a pleasant walk, many visitors choose to take a taxi into Tivoli. When departing from Rome, take the Metro train to the central station and board the regional train to Tiburtina there. Once in Tivoli, there are multiple stops that are located within a 15-20 minute walk to the central town, and the two main tourist attractions of Villa Adrianna and Villa d’Este. Be sure to locate which station is best situated for your final destination.

Taxi

Taxis are more convenient but are not always necessary with the many transport options. Often tourists will utilize the train or bus, and then hire a taxi to take them from the station to their destination. Another option is the private guided bus, sometimes referred to as the shuttle, which provides greater comfort and flexibility. Not many tourists utilize taxis and prefer to walk or take a guided bus tour. Tivoli is rather small and quite walkable. The distance between the two most popular villas, Adrianna and d’Este, can be covered on foot, but it is mostly uphill, and may take over an hour. There is a bus that travels between these two spots, but in this case a taxi may be more convenient.
