Wow. Here’s an article to make you think twice about rushing, carefree, into the surf on your next trip to the beach. This USA Today article about the U.S. beaches with the most shark attacks inspired me to think twice before wading into the warm waters of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, which apparently is the shark capital of the world.
For some reason, I always assumed the shark capital of the world was in some other country. Australia maybe, or on some otherwise idyllic island somewhere. But no. A shark expert quoted in the story said, “Most people who have swum in and around New Smyrna have been within 10 feet of a shark in their lifetime.”
The good news, which you’ll find after braving the initially scary picture of just how much closer we swim to sharks than we might think, is that sharks rarely attack. Another shark expert says humans are more likely to be hit by lightning than to be attacked by a shark. Those are odds I can swim with. Just maybe not in the shark attack capital of the world.
