By Independence Day, the summer travel season has kicked into high gear, as many travelers depart for long weekends or week-long trips away. Of course, it’s also one of the most expensive times of year to fly, often even pricier than during the December holidays.
Luckily, there are ways to save at least a few bucks on your flight. Fare-prediction website Farecast suggests adjusting your return date to save between $25 and $40 per trip.
Forego an itinerary departing on Sunday, June 29, and returning on Sunday, July 6, in favor of a return flight on Saturday, July 5, or Monday, July 7, to save about $25. If you can be even more flexible, you can save about $40 by returning on Tuesday, July 8, or Wednesday, July 9.
If you’re still finding expensive fares when you change your dates, you may be tempted to wait for a last-minute deal. Unfortunately, if previous years are any indication, fares aren’t going anywhere except up, particularly for travel around a holiday.
