From a windbreaker to water shoes, you’ll want to make sure you have this San Diego clothing in your bag before you leave home.

Activewear

This might be the most fitness-oriented city you’ve ever visited, so come prepared for all the hiking, biking, jogging, surfing, and yoga. San Diegans are often on their way to or from some sort of active pursuit. Pair yoga pants or men’s athleisure pants with a wicking tank top, and you’ll fit right in with this on-the-go crowd.

Padres Cap

What to wear in San Diego if you really want to fit in? A Padres cap, of course. Everyone will take kindly to you, plus you’ll have decent protection from the constant sun.

Athletic Sunglasses

In San Diego, durable shades are a must-have, whether you’re biking, engaging in watersports, or just lounging on the beach.

Water Shoes

Comfortable aqua socks are multipurpose in San Diego: Use them for wading into the tide, as well as during a sunset yoga session.

Light Daypack

Whether you’ve decided to hike Torrey Pines or Sunset Cliffs, throw on a light, comfortable backpack to carry your day’s needs.

Sunscreen

This is one of the world’s sunniest cities, so when planning what to wear in San Diego, remember that your organic SPF 50 should go on before even your underwear does.

Dress Shirt or Blouse

When it comes to San Diego clothing, casual is usually best. But at most upscale restaurants, a button-up shirt or nice dress will help you fit in—although jackets and ties are rarely, if ever, required.

Windbreaker

In San Diego, beach gear is great for daytime, but you’ll want a sweater or light jacket for the evenings or for windy days on the water.

Flip-Flops

If you’re not wearing flip-flops, you’ll probably be the only one.

Coverup
