Why was a drunk passenger taped to his seat on an Icelandair flight? Find out in our weekly roundup of new and noteworthy travel stories.
Passenger Taped to Seat on Flight
According to a report from NBC News, an unruly passenger who had too much to drink was taped to his seat on an Icelandair flight. A photo shows the man secured to his seat with what looks like green duct tape. A passenger who was on the flight explained on his blog, “When he became unruly, (i.e. trying to choke the woman next to him and screaming the plane was going to crash), fellow passengers subdued him and tie(d) him up for the rest of the flight. He was escorted off the flight by police when it landed.”
Although the image of the man taped into his seat looks questionable, NBC News reports that the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey confirmed the incident. The man was taken into custody upon landing, but ultimately wasn’t charged with a crime.
Stop Traveling Alone
… says Bart Schaneman of Matador Network, who argues that traveling with people you know is “a better way” because you’ll have someone to talk to about the trip for years to come. Oh, and “it’s easy to be lazy when you’re on your own.” Schaneman claims that a companion on the road will encourage you to get up and explore the world when you’re feeling “scared or sick or just plain exhausted.”
I’m not sure if I agree with Schaneman. I think solo travel and travel with other people both have their good and bad points, yet neither is wholly superior to the other. What do you think?
Interactive Gallery of Souvenirs
If you traveled alone and need to share your experiences with someone post-getaway, send a photo of your souvenirs to The New York Times. The Gray Lady published a fascinating interactive gallery of reader souvenirs, featuring everything from beach sand in bottles to Russian nesting dolls and the stories behind them. Check it out here.
