Winslow Things to Do
The town was an important location as the railroad system expanded west in the 1800s. It is also located on the famous Route 66. Here are some of the most popular things to do in Winslow, Arizona.
Take it Easy
In the song “Take it Easy” Glenn Frye talks about two girls in a flatbed ford stopping to take a look at him. The town has dedicated parts of their park to that very song. There is a painted mural in the park depicting the famous scene from the song. They even have an actual red flatbed Ford parked there.
The La Posada Hotel
In the 1920s, the Posada hotel was built by a railroad tycoon to be one of the nicest hotels in the Southwest. La Posada literally means “resting place” in Spanish, a befitting description for this hotel. Many tourists stay at the hotel today because it is centrally located to so many attractions. Don’t worry, it has been renovated a few times since it was first built.
The 9/11 Memorial Garden
Winslow pays homage to the lives lost in the World Trade Center Attacks with their 9/11 Memorial Garden. The centerpiece of the garden are the two steel girders in the middle that are from the actual World Trade Center. There is also a flag that was originally flown at the Pentagon as well. The steel beams are actually the largest piece of the towers given to another city by the City of New York. They are fifteen feet tall.
Largest Preserved Meteorite Crater
The largest preserved impact site created by a meteor is located just a short drive down I-40. This particular meteor hit the Earth an estimated 50,000 years ago. This crater is massive at almost 600-feet deep and almost two and half miles across. Besides the crater, there are a few other attractions at the site. This includes a restaurant, gift store, and an interactive learning center. For the best experience, take the guided tour along the rim.
