US Airways today said it has ended its hostile takeover bid after Delta’s creditors announced that they itend to support Delta’s plan to emerge from bankruptcy as an independent airline.
To which I have only this to say: phew! Plenty has been written regarding why a US Airways-Delta merger would be bad news for travelers. And many observers maintained all along that such a merger would never actually happen, not least of which because Delta and its employees wanted no part of it. Still, it’s been a tense 11-week game of cat-and-mouse between the two airlines as we’ve all waited for official word to come down.
For its part, US Airways says it has no other mergers in mind.
